After many years of work as a nurse anesthetist at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children and Lankenau Hospital, Eleanor Davis now devotes her time to volunteering and overseeing charitable foundations in the Philadelphia area.
In addition to her work on the Breastcancer.org Board of Directors, Eleanor is a Trustee of the Connelly Foundation in Conshohocken, PA, Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, and a member of the Board of Overseers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing.
Eleanor has also devoted a great deal of her time and energy to breast cancer organizations. She is a Sustaining Member on the Women's Board of the American Cancer Society, a visitation volunteer for the American Cancer Society Reach to Recovery Program, and a former member of that program's Advisory Board. She has been a Hospice bereavement volunteer for 12 years.
In recognition of her work, Eleanor received the American Cancer Society Volunteer Achievement Award in 1983 and 1995 and the Living Beyond Breast Cancer Volunteer Recognition Award in 1998.
Combining her volunteer work with her passion for hiking and mountain climbing, Eleanor has scaled several peaks as a member of the "Expedition Inspiration," an organization dedicated to raising awareness and funds for breast cancer research. In 1995 Eleanor and 16 other breast cancer survivors attempted to scale Mt. Aconcagua in Argentina. Three members reached the top. A documentary film was produced about the journey to bring hope to other survivors. In 1998, the group attempted Mt. Aspiring in New Zealand.
Eleanor has been living in Philadelphia with her husband since 1960 and has three children.
Eleanor received her RN in 1959 from the Western Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing, attended Temple University Hospital School of Anesthesia, and was certified as a nurse anesthetist in 1962. She returned to school and received her BSN from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing in 1982.
"I joined the Breastcancer.org Board of Directors because I believe that breastcancer.org is a vehicle that will empower individuals coping with breast cancer anywhere and at any time," says Eleanor, "by providing relevant, up-to-date information about breast cancer, about the diagnosis, the choices of treatment, and the continuum of care."
