Karen Wenger-Lohrman directs services and communication for Topper's Spa in Philadelphia, a place of welcome and healing pleasures. She is also a single mother with two daughters, 13 and 16. Karen was diagnosed with cancer two years ago, and decided on a double mastectomy: "I didn't want to keep worrying about odd lumps and symptoms. And I didn't choose reconstruction—no more surgery for me. I'm a small person and I can wear a padded bra and look fine."
Karen used the web right from the start, wanting to find out everything about the disease. "But I couldn't distinguish good from bad. That's what's so great about Breastcancer.org: medically sound, no junk, run by a known author and doctor whom I love. I see my role as getting out the word to everyone I know who needs this site. I want people to become more aware, to realize this is not a death sentence. I'm proof—I know I will live to see my children's children." That's Karen's message for one and all.
