Martine Piccart-Gebhart, M.D., Ph.D.

Martine Piccart-Gebhart, M.D., Ph.D. is associate professor in oncology at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles and head of the medicine department at the Jules Bordet Institute in Brussels, Belgium. Since June 2006, she has been president of the European Organization for the Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC). She also plays an active role in new drug development, both as a researcher and as a clinical expert for registration. Dr. Piccart-Gebhart currently chairs two large pivotal adjuvant breast cancer trials. She founded the Breast International Group (BIG) of which she is chair.

Dr. Piccart-Gebhart is the author or co-author of 250 scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals. She has also contributed to more than 30 books on cancer and is on the editorial board of several journals. An invited speaker at more than 100 international symposia, she is also engaged in teaching at the Free University of Brussels and at the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO), the European Cancer Conference (ECCO), the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), and the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). She has received numerous awards in recognition of her achievements in the clinical research field, including the ESMO Award for Exceptional Contribution to the Advancement of Medical Oncology in Europe (1997). She was also awarded with the Miami Breast Cancer Conference Award of Excellence for 2007.
