Martine Piccart-Gebhart, M.D., Ph.D., is Associate Professor in oncology at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles and Head of the Chemotherapy Department at the Jules Bordet Institute in Brussels, Belgium. Dr. Piccart-Gebhart is a member of numerous professional organizations. In March 2003, she was elected Vice-President of the European Organization for the Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC). She also plays an active role in new drug development, both as a researcher and as a clinical expert for registration. Dr. Piccart-Gebhart currently chairs two large, pivotal adjuvant breast cancer trials. She founded the Breast International Group (BIG) of which she is chair.
The author or co-author of 200 scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals, she has also contributed to more than twenty books on cancer and is on the editorial board of several journals. An invited speaker at more than 100 international symposia, she is also engaged in teaching at the Free University of Brussels and for the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO), the European Cancer Conference (ECCO), the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), and the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). In 1997, she received the Award of the European Society of Medical Oncology "for exceptional contribution to the advancement of medical oncology in Europe, in particular in the fields of breast cancer and ovarian cancer."
