Susan E. Calderbank, D.M.D.

Susan Calderbank is an associate professor of oral medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. She graduated from the University Of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. After many years practicing dentistry, Dr. Calderbank has chosen to dedicate her practice to the oral complications of cancer therapies -- from diagnosis to prevention and treatment. The Pennsylvania Dental Association granted her a Special Public Service Award for her efforts in raising awareness of the oral complications of cancer therapies.

Dr. Calderbank dedicated herself to this area of focus when her mother was diagnosed with cancer and suffered oral health side effects that were debilitating. Dr. Calderbank discovered that even as a dentist, she could not help her mother. This was a turning point, and Dr. Calderbank quickly developed a passion to devote her career to alleviating oral side effects of cancer treatment. She believes that a standard oral health protocol should be adopted so that a patient’s oral health is as important as their cancer therapy. She is an active lecturer and regularly delivers a presentation called “Oral Complications of Cancer Therapies: Diagnosis, Prevention and Treatment.”

Dr. Calderbank believes that her work with Breastcancer.org will further help to build awareness of the oral complications associated with cancer treatments, help patients manage these side effects, and help patients maintain good oral health throughout treatment therapy and survivorship.
