Core Needle Biopsy

  • A biopsy is a procedure that takes a sample of tissue to be examined in the laboratory.
  • A breast biopsy is done when mammogram results seem to show something that appears abnormal and might be a cancer.
  • A core needle biopsy may also be called a stereotactic core biopsy.
  • A core biopsy is done with a hollow-tube needle inserted into the breast to remove a hot dog-shaped piece of tissue.
