(ep-ih-der-mul growth fak-tir ree-sep-tir)

The receptor protein found on the surface of some cells and to which the epidermal growth factor binds, causing the cells to divide. EGFR appears to be a cancer stimulant, found at abnormally high levels on the surface of many types of cancer cells, and may be why these cells divide excessively if the epidermal growth factor is also present. Also known as ErbB1 or HER1.
