A group of drugs used to fight breast cancer cells that have hormone receptors. These drugs can reduce the risk of a new breast cancer. They can also delay the return of breast cancer and control its spread. They block estrogen receptors on breast cancer cells. This can slow down or stop the growth of cancers that need estrogen to grow. Drugs in this group include tamoxifen (brand names: Nolvadex, Apo-Tamox, Tamofen, Tamone), toremifene (brand name: Evista), and raloxifene (brand name: Fareston).
