Question from SmithS: What was the most important update for metastatic patients (particularly HER2 patients)?
Answer —Generosa Grana, M.D., F.A.C.P.: I would say that the most exciting thing was the realization that there is improved understanding of the pathways involved in breast cancer, including the HER2 pathway, and that various strategies are being used to approach those pathways jointly. It will no longer be an issue with having only trastuzumab. There was interesting data combining trastuzumab and lapatinib (brand name: Tykerb) , as well as incorporation of other agents that may play a role in this pathway. So the future for HER2 positive disease looks very promising.

Generosa Grana, M.D., F.A.C.PGenerosa Grana, M.D., F.A.C.P. is the director of the Cooper Cancer Institute and heads the division of hematology/medical oncology at Cooper University Hospital.

Carol Kaplan, M.D. is an assistant professor of clinical medicine in the Rena Rowan Breast Center at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Her work revolves around the clinical care of breast cancer patients, as well as teaching medical students and house staff.
