Inverted Nipple

Page last modified on: March 14, 2007

QUESTION: My mother passed away 13 years ago from breast cancer. My nipples are going in when I raise my arm. Also, they are shaped differently. Should I worry about this? My doctor said it is old age, sagging. She says they're nothing to worry about. I would like your opinion, since I do worry.

ANSWER: I'm very sorry to hear about your mom. You must miss her very much.

It's true that as we age, our breast tissue becomes less glandular and more fatty. Plus, gravity produces a natural droop. If your nipples pull in a little, equally on both sides, when your arms are raised, then that sounds normal. For sure, if there is a significant change, then I'd make sure to have things checked out just in case. See a breast specialist if you remain concerned.
