Wait time for biopsy results?

Page last modified on: August 15, 2008
Question from emtdmm: I'm scheduled to go for surgery for a lump in my breast, not a cyst, in seven hours. They tell me I won't know if it is cancerous for three to five days. Is this normal?
Answer —Marisa Weiss, M.D., president and founder: It may take three to five days to do a careful analysis of the lump under the microscope. They have to be extremely careful to come to the right conclusion. The uncertainty stinks! All of you know that so well. While you are waiting, tune into resources at Breastcancer.org so that the information and support can empower you.

On Wednesday, June 14, 2000, our Ask-the-Expert Online Conference was called Easing Breast Cancer Fears. Marisa Weiss, M.D. answered your questions about managing emotional effects of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.
