Extent of scarring after mastectomy/reconstruction?

Page last modified on: August 15, 2008
Question from KatieD: My mom is about to have a mastectomy and I was wondering about scarring involved with the reconstruction (trans) and complications with the reconstruction.
Answer —Marisa Weiss, M.D., president and founder: After your mother's breast has been removed, the doctor will try to recreate a new breast by borrowing extra tissue from her belly, and moving it up into the breast area. This leaves a scar across your belly as well as at the breast area. We have beautiful illustrations of this procedure in Moving Beyond, Reconstruction.

On Wednesday, June 14, 2000, our Ask-the-Expert Online Conference was called Easing Breast Cancer Fears. Marisa Weiss, M.D. answered your questions about managing emotional effects of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.
