Exercise, herbs to help sleep?

Page last modified on: October 16, 2008
Question from Seg0354: I'm having trouble balancing pain medications, hot flashes, and stress and that's affecting my sleep. Is there some exercise routine or herbal aid that might help?
Answers —Helena Schotland, M.D.: Exercise is actually good for all of us. Period. But you don't want to exercise too close to bed time. Exercise tends to make people wake up, so you don't want to go to the gym at 9 at night. But exercise at some point during the day, preferably earlier, would be extremely beneficial.
Marisa Weiss, M.D., president and founder: What about vigorous sexual activity close to sleep? For some people it may make you relax and go to sleep, but for other people it may be a "wake me up."
Helena Schotland, M.D.: It really depends on the person. If you find it pleasurable and relaxing, something that makes you drowsy, then take advantage of it.

On Wednesday, January 17, 2007, our Ask-the-Expert Online Conference was called Sleep Well: Healthy Habits for Good Rest. Helena Schotland, M.D. and moderator Marisa Weiss, M.D. answered your questions about ways to improve your sleep.
