Care until the Cure

Lymphedema can be a very frustrating condition. Women who have this problem deserve careful attention, support, and the best medical care.

Advocates have started a movement to have women wear a pink bracelet on their at-risk arm for instant recognition and trauma prevention. Lymphedema Alert pink bracelets are available through the National Lymphedema Network (NLN) at 800-541-3259 or on the web at www.lymphnet.org. You can also contact the NLN for general information about lymphedema, and for treatment centers and support groups in your area.

For information and support from other women who share your concerns, join one of the Breastcancer.org discussion boards. You'll find discussion boards dedicated to moving beyond cancer, metastatic disease, and other breast cancer-related subjects.

Fortunately, most edema, when it occurs, is mild and manageable. Prevention is the key. Follow the Avoiding Lymphedema Do's and Don'ts guidelines and take quick action at the first sign of trouble. Also look in your local library, local bookstore, or online bookstore for Lymphedema: A Breast Cancer Patient's Guide to Prevention and Healing by Jeannie Burt et al.

Remember that it's important to keep participating in all the activities that give you pleasure and satisfaction. You may need to modify some of these activities so that they don't cause additional swelling. Consult with your occupational or physical therapist for help with this, and for ongoing management and care.
