Flexion exercises cause fractures with osteoporosis?

Page last modified on: September 9, 2008
Question from Joy2: I think when discussing exercises it's important to state that flexion exercises of the trunk and hip can cause vertebral and hip fractures if you have osteoporosis.
Answers —Charles Shapiro, M.D.: If you have osteoporosis and already have a fracture, then I would consult your physician about the best kind of exercise for you.
Marisa Weiss, M.D., Breastcancer.org president and founder: It's important to do these things in moderation. If you're not exercising at all now and you want to start tomorrow, you need to be very careful and gentle on your body. It's also important to learn how to stretch before and after exercise so that you can take the best care of your muscles.

On Wednesday, August 21, 2002, our Ask-the-Expert Online Conference was called Keeping Your Bones StrongCharles L. Shapiro, M.D. and Marisa Weiss, M.D. answered your questions about how to measure the strength of your bones, how to find out your risk for osteoporosis, and what you can do to lower that risk.

The materials presented in these conferences do not necessarily reflect the views of Breastcancer.org.
