Are aspartame and saccharine products safe?

Question from Sandra: Is it OK to use aspartame or saccharine products for sweetener?

Answer —Ronda Gates, M.S., R.Ph.: Like everything, moderation in all things. I did an extensive review of the literature on aspartame, and could see no harm in using it when it's part of a balanced and varied diet. If you are using it to lose weight, it has not been shown to make a difference. When you are baking, you can use fruit juices in place of sugar, like apple juice or prune extract, instead of a sugar substitute.

On Wednesday, July 19, 2000, our Ask-the-Expert Online Conference was called Food for Cancer Recovery. Ronda Gates, M.S., R.Ph. and moderator Marisa Weiss, M.D. answered your questions about nutrition and how it relates to cancer recovery.
