Couple glasses of wine a week okay?

Page last modified on: October 13, 2008
Question from Mary: I had a double mastectomy after a lumpectomy and chemo. Is it okay to have a couple of glasses of wine once a week?
Answers —Diana Dyer, M.S., R.D.: Yes, I think the data at this point has looked pretty carefully at the role of wine. Through epidemiological studies, we have been unable to see any relationship between wine intake and increased risk of recurrence. General guidelines are one 4-5 ounce glass per day or less. Red wine will have a higher quantity of phytochemicals that may help with reducing the risk of cancer.
Jennifer Sabol, M.D., F.A.C.S.: Certainly with all the information that comes out about alcohol increasing the risk of developing breast cancer, once you have a diagnosis of cancer there is no data to suggest that alcohol increases the risk of recurrence.

On Wednesday, November 15, 2006, our Ask-the-Expert Online Conference was called Eating and Drinking Through the Holidays. Diana Dyer, M.S., R.D. and moderator Jennifer Sabol, M.D. answered your questions about how to stay healthy during the most hectic, high-calorie time of year.
