Does alcohol affect risk? Arimidex?

Page last modified on: October 14, 2008
Question from SheilaK: I have been told that wine or any alcohol acts as a hormone, so it should be limited to one drink a day. How much more at risk is a woman if she has 2 or 3 drinks over the course of the evening? I am on Arimidex. Does this fact make a difference?
Answers —Jennifer Sabol, M.D., F.A.C.S.: Wine does not act as a hormone to stimulate breast cancer, nor has it been proven to increase your risk of recurrence of breast cancer.
Diana Dyer, M.S., R.D.: In fact, all the studies that looked at alcohol and recurrence rates have been unable to find any relationship at all.
Jennifer Sabol, M.D., F.A.C.S.: The Arimidex (chemical name: anastrozole) is not impacted at all by alcohol.

On Wednesday, November 15, 2006, our Ask-the-Expert Online Conference was called Eating and Drinking Through the Holidays. Diana Dyer, M.S., R.D. and moderator Jennifer Sabol, M.D. answered your questions about how to stay healthy during the most hectic, high-calorie time of year.
