Page last modified on: April 3, 2009

Also known as: Matricaria recutita, manzanilla, matricaire, pin heads.

Potential uses: Chamomile is used as a mouth rinse to treat sores that can be caused by chemotherapy. It is also thought to be a sleep aid.

Usual dose: For a mouth rinse, 10 to 15 drops of liquid extract in a half cup of warm water are used 3 times per day. Chamomile can also be drunk as tea.

Are there any risks? No significant side effects have been reported from drinking chamomile tea. Short-term use (up to 8 weeks) as a mouth rinse also has shown no significant side effects.

What does the research show? One study in humans showed that using chamomile as an oral rinse helped reduce mouth sores caused by some chemotherapy.
