Conjugated-Linoleic Acid

End of Year 2008

Also known as: CLA, CLA-free fatty acid, CLA-FFA.

Potential uses: It's thought that conjugated-linoleic acid can reduce the risk of cancer, combat extreme weight loss caused by cancer, and promote weight loss generally.

Usual dose: Conjugated-linoleic acid is found in dairy products, beef, venison, goat meat, and mutton. Doses of 2 to 7 grams per day have been used to promote weight loss in obese patients.

Are there any risks? The amount found in food is considered safe. Not enough research has been done to determine if it is safe to take as a supplement.

What does the research show? CLA may reduce body fat, but it does not promote weight loss. No research has been done in humans looking at the effect of CLA on breast cancer.
