Visualization, Meditation, Music

Page last modified on: July 10, 2008

Visualization

The use of imagery, or visualization, aims to focus the mind to enhance body functions and processes.

It can sometimes ease nausea, pain, and anxiety. You can do it on your own or with the help of a trained therapist.

Visualization may involve:

  • mentally picturing a state of being healthy
  • imagining yourself at a beautiful, restful place, like a beach or waterfall
  • seeing yourself doing something active and enjoyable, such as swimming or running

Meditation

Women with breast cancer fight battles in their minds as well as their bodies. Many use meditation, either on their own or guided by a teacher or recording, as a way to strengthen their thoughts.

There may be a meditation group in your community, at your place of worship, or local hospital.

Music

Therapy through music—listening to a CD or attending a live concert, playing an instrument, singing alone or in a group—can be a powerful healer.

Music is often used as a technique to aid visualization or meditation.
