Advice for exes that want to help?

Question from LeeCho: My ex was just diagnosed and I'm not sure how to deal with the situation. We've maintained an okay relationship and I want to help any way I can, but I'm not sure if she wants my help. I want to be there for both her and our daughter, who lives with her. Do you have any advice for exes?
Answer —Rosalind Kleban, L.C.S.W.: The answer to this is really quite simple. You need to ask your ex what you can do, what she'll permit you to do, and what will be helpful. That will give you the guidance that you're asking for. You might also want to ask your daughter if she needs anything during this time.
