Research News on Chemotherapy

Page last modified on: August 24, 2009

Chemotherapy treatment uses medicine to weaken and destroy cancer cells in the body, including cells at the original cancer site and any cancer cells that may have spread to another part of the body. Chemotherapy is "systemic" therapy, which means it affects the whole body by going through the bloodstream. Because of this, chemotherapy also can cause a number of side effects and can be hard for some people to tolerate. Researchers are looking for new chemotherapy medicines, as well as how to make currently available medicines more effective and minimize side effects.

As part of the Breastcancer.org Research News program, our experts examine the most recent chemotherapy research results and offer practical information in easy-to-understand language on how the findings may affect you.
