Licenses for Chinese medicine practitioners?

Page last modified on: October 2, 2008
Question from MaggieP: What kind of license do Chinese medical practitioners have?
Answer —Raymond Chang, M.D.: It depends. For herbal medicine, there's no licensing in this country. Licensing usually goes state by state. Most states have licensing for acupuncture but no licensing for herbs. Herbs you can get without a prescription and they're over the counter to begin with, so it does not have a licensing requirement, Chinese herbs notwithstanding. There's license for massage and acupuncture.

On Wednesday, September 21, 2005, our Ask-the-Expert Online Conference was called Traditional Chinese MedicineRaymond Chang, M.D. and moderator Beth Baughman Dupree, M.D., F.A.C.S. answered your questions about how to discuss Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with your cancer doctor.
