Cost of Complementary Treatments

Most of the therapies discussed in this section are not covered by insurance. Certain therapies may be partially covered. Or you may get a discount on therapies provided by practitioners recommended by your insurer.

Other treatments, such as chiropractic therapy, may be covered for a certain number of sessions.

The cost will vary depending on where you live, the type of technique, and any supplies you may need (equipment, herbal treatments, etc.).

If you're interested in trying some complementary therapies and cost is an issue, you may want to:

• Explore therapies that cost nothing. Most support groups offered by hospitals or community groups are free. Keeping a journal or enhancing your spirituality and praying also can be done at no or very little cost. Many books and websites focus on meditation. Once you understand the basics, you can start practicing meditation on your own.
• Take one yoga or tai chi class at a community center and then practice at home with a videotape or DVD. Community centers may also provide classes at a reduced price.
