Stage IIIA and Operable IIIC

Treatment OptionsSTAGE IIIA and Operable IIIC

Tumor greater than 5 cm with lymph nodes involved (IIIA) OR
Tumor less than 5 cm and lymph nodes under the arm involved and clumped together (IIIA) OR
Any size tumor with spread to more than 10 lymph nodes in or near the breast and/or lymph nodes near the neck or under the collarbone (operable IIIC)

Treatment to the Breast

Modified radical mastectomy followed by radiation

OR

Lumpectomy plus radiation following chemotherapy to shrink a large single cancer

Treatment to the Lymph Nodes

Axillary lymph nodes removed by traditional approach

AND

Possible radiation to supraclavicular and/or internal mammary lymph nodes

Chemotherapy

Almost always recommended

Hormonal Therapy

Used for people with hormone-receptor-positive cancer

Targeted Therapy

May be used for people with cancers that have certain characteristics (for example, cancers with too many HER2 protein receptors)

Treatment to Other Parts of the Body

Does not apply
