Vice President of Technology
We are a nonprofit organization founded by breast oncologist Marisa C. Weiss, MD, and born out of her conviction that people with breast cancer need more than a doctor's visit can provide.
We are the leading patient-focused resource for breast health and breast cancer information and support. We engage, educate, and empower people with our expert information and dynamic peer support community to help them make the best decisions for their lives.
Since 2000, we have reached 194 million people worldwide. Breastcancer.org receives more than 20 million visits each year, and we host the world’s largest online breast cancer peer community, with more than 200,000 registered members.
Breastcancer.org relies on both traditional nonprofit fundraising and advertising support and as such operates as a leading digital publisher. For the talented and experienced technology leader who wants more emphasis on impact than profit – but appreciates and thrives in business-oriented culture – Breastcancer.org is the place for you.
We are looking for an energetic, passionate leader to be a part of our organization during a time of exciting growth. As the first internal technology lead at Breastcancer.org, you will contribute to the ongoing evolution of our vision and strategy and the achievement of our ambitious goals. You must be a systems thinker who can guide our evolving technology architecture, new product and feature development, and our approach to security. You will be responsible for our technology, systems, and security, and you will both establish the foundation for the technology function and guide our approach to technology – what processes we put in place, what vendors we rely on, and what tools we use.
All of this will be in service to maintaining, improving on, and building an innovative digital channel that provides our users with the personalized, predictive, and supportive resources they need to navigate their breast cancer experience.
This role reports directly to the CEO, with oversight from the Board of Directors and Technology Advisory Board. You will manage multiple technology vendor partnerships as currently Breastcancer.org fully outsources all services that provide the technology support for internal operations.
Lead the technical vision, strategy, and operating plans for Breastcancer.org technology, architecture, and infrastructure, as well as defining the principles and practices required to deliver with excellence.
Deliver a modern, scalable, secure platform with emphasis in health advocacy and community while simultaneously driving high impact revenue in publishing and advertising strategies.
Manage all third-party relationships, vendors, and outcomes as it relates to selection, delivery, SLAs, and support from these parties.
Establish and enforce standards for documentation and knowledge sharing across internal and contracted teams to guide and optimize engineer efficiency as well as ensuring knowledge continuity and awareness by all team members.
Establish and refine best practices in areas of development, testing, and production with accountability to key metrics.
Drive implementation, development, and delivery with attention to health information management and adherence to security practices and regulatory compliance (product, platform, and data management) where applicable.
Manage, invest in, and work closely with the Director of Digital Project Management as they lead the project management function.
Lead and support cross-functional initiatives with product, design, content, marketing, advertising, data analytics, and business development teams.
Support and advise the product roadmap from a technical perspective as it relates to sharing insights and experience regarding technical feasibility, opportunity, scope, potential obstacles, and alternatives to achieving desired outcomes.
Invest in and grow teams, both internal and external, to support Breastcancer.org initiatives.
Continue strategic and tactical reliance upon outsourced services for providing implementation and support for all technology-driven initiatives while incrementally adding key internal hires with vendor consolidation to achieve knowledge continuity and best in class performance across all teams.
At least 10 years of meaningful technology leadership experience with scalable cloud-based sites, apps, content platforms, digital media, SEO, advertising (ad-tech), and online community
Experience with cloud-native strategies, including experience with Infrastructure as Code; AWS experience preferred
Experienced and comfortable managing full-stack development teams, remote onshore and offshore
Proficiency in both Lean and Agile approaches; ability to thrive in a demanding environment where tactical and strategic initiatives are driven in parallel
Demonstrated management tenure in an entrepreneurial and mission-driven environment
Prior accountability for both engineering execution and results by pairing your strength of (technical) experience with your ability to effectively influence and guide, offering strategic insights and proactively helping solve problems, yet leaning on your teams to do the hands-on work
Deep understanding of security and compliance risk of managing data; detailed knowledge of consumer privacy and first-party data management a plus
Experience in understanding and leveraging the existing data analytics/SEO capabilities to complement existing capabilities
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a style that can communicate complex technical topics in a way that meets the needs and experience of both technical and non-technical audiences
Excellent organizational skills, analytic capabilities, and attention to detail
