The Breastcancer.org Professional Advisory Board provides advice and guidance to our organization as we fulfill our mission: making sense of the complex medical information about breast health and breast cancer so you can make the best decisions for your care and well-being. Members of our advisory board are leaders in breast cancer care and related fields who aid in our understanding of visitors' needs and current standards of care in breast oncology. The advisory board helps with the conception, creation, and revisions of our award-winning content. They bring their professional voice to our website and offer insights about patient needs and behaviors based on what they see in their medical practices.

Amy Bragagnini is a registered dietitian who is a certified specialist in oncology nutrition, as well as media spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. She is currently a dietitian at the Trinity Health Lacks Cancer Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Dr. Ciocca is a surgeon specializing in multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. She also treats benign (noncancerous) breast conditions. As a breast cancer surgeon, she has a special interest in the care of women with inherited high risk of breast cancer. She also focuses on the concerns of younger women with breast cancer and work closely with fertility specialists to offer fertility-sparing cancer care.

Dr. Colditz is an internationally recognized leader in cancer prevention. As an epidemiologist and public health expert, he has a longstanding interest in the preventable causes of chronic disease, particularly among women. He is also interested in strategies to speed translation of research findings to prevention strategies that work. His past research has focused on the health effects of smoking, weight and weight gain, physical activity, diet, and the adverse effects of medicines such as post-menopausal hormone therapy, documenting that current use increases risk of breast cancer. Dr. Colditz is the Neiss-Gain Professor in the School of Medicine, chief of the Division of Public Health Sciences in the Department of Surgery, program director of the Master of Population Health Sciences degree program, and the associate director of prevention and control at the Siteman Cancer Center.

Michael DeLong
Michael DeLong, MD

Michael DeLong, MD, is an assistant professor-in-residence in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. He completed medical school at Duke University, followed by a six-year integrated plastic surgery residency and microsurgery fellowship at UCLA. Dr. DeLong’s clinical and research interests primarily focus on breast reconstruction including implant and autologous options. He has also developed a national quality improvement program for breast reconstruction, now encompassing 91 participating sites across the United States.

An NIH-funded investigator and recipient of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Best Breast Paper award, Dr. DeLong is a recognized authority in FDA regulatory science. He completed a fellowship at the FDA Center for Devices and Radiological Health and serves as a voting member of the FDA General and Plastic Surgery Devices Panel, helping guide national policy on surgical device safety and innovation.

Suzanne Dixon
Suzanne Dixon, MPH, MS, RDN

Suzanne Dixon, MPH, MS, RD, is an epidemiologist and registered dietitian. She has delivered over 200 invited and submission-accepted lectures on cancer nutrition, epidemiology, public health, and chronic disease to academic, professional, policy, and consumer groups. She has two dozen research publications, and is a research consulting lead with Humana Healthcare Research in Portland, Oregon.

Ali Esmaili, MD, is a board-certified radiologist and fellowship-trained breast imager who serves as the medical director of breast imaging at RadNet Imaging in the Inland Empire of California. Dr. Esmaili graduated from the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine and received his fellowship training at the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Esmaili's expertise is in interpreting all breast imaging modalities and performing breast biopsies.

Kevin Fox
Kevin Fox, MD

Kevin Fox is professor emeritus of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and is a medical oncologist who specialized in the treatment of breast cancer during his 36 years on the medical faculty. He was the first director of Penn’s Rena Rowan Breast Center, from 1999 to 2019.

She has received numerous prestigious awards for her research contributions, including the McGuire Award for Excellence in Breast Cancer Research and the Umberto Veronesi Award for the Future Fight Against Breast Cancer.

Dr. Ross is especially interested in helping patients and families with a genetic mutation linked to cancer, particularly breast, ovarian, and colon cancer, as well as Lynch Syndrome.

Dr. Ruderman is senior biologist and lecturer at the High Meadows Environmental Institute. She previously served as the Marion V. Nelson Professor of Cell Biology at Harvard Medical School in Boston and as the president and director of the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole. Trained as a developmental biologist, most of her research has focused on the molecular mechanisms that regulate cell division and early development. More recently, she has turned her attention to the public health and wildlife effects of environmental contaminants that mimic or interfere with estrogen, testosterone and other hormones.

Dr. Rugo is division chief of breast medical oncology and a professor of medical oncology and therapeutics research at City of Hope, a cancer research and treatment organization.. She oversees all women’s cancer research initiatives and clinical care at City of Hope. Dr. Rugo has conducted a number of studies focusing on reducing toxicity from therapy, resulting in approval of scalp cooling to reduce chemotherapy induced hair loss, and a steroid mouthwash to reduce mouth sores.

Dr. Schmitz is professor in the University of Pittsburgh Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology/Oncology. She is a leading researcher in exercise oncology and uses exercise in cancer prevention, control, and survivorship. She has led many exercise trials, translated her work into clinical practice, published approximately 300 peer-reviewed scientific papers, and had $30 million in funding for her research since 2001. Dr. Schmitz was the lead author of the first American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Roundtable on Exercise for Cancer Survivors, which published guidance for exercise testing and prescription for cancer survivors in July 2010. She chaired an International Multidisciplinary ACSM Roundtable on Exercise and Cancer Prevention and Control in March 2018, where physicians, outpatient rehabilitation specialists, researchers and exercise professionals in the room broadly agreed that the field of exercise oncology needs to be elevated further. Dr. Schmitz’s professional mission is to determine how to do so.

He has published more than 340 original articles, review articles, editorials, commentaries, and book chapters, primarily in the area of breast diseases. He has authored a popular breast pathology textbook, Biopsy Interpretation of the Breast, now its third edition. His research interests focus on risk factors for local recurrence in patients with invasive breast cancer and ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) treated with lumpectomy, benign breast disease and breast cancer risk, and stromal-epithelial interactions in breast tumor progression.

Lillie D. Shockney served as administrative director of the Johns Hopkins Breast Center from 1997 to November 2018 and director of Johns Hopkins Cancer Survivorship Programs from 2011 to November 2018, at which time she retired from her hospital leadership roles. She continues to serve on the faculty in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and also as the co-developer of Work Stride - Managing Cancer at Work, an employee benefit developed for Hopkins employees that now is being utilized by businesses and corporations nationally. A two-time breast cancer survivor, she has worked tirelessly to improve the care of people with breast cancer around the world.

Dr. Sledge is executive vice president and chief medical officer of Caris Life Sciences. Before joining Caris, he was professor of medicine at the Stanford University School of Medicine where he served as a member of the Division of Oncology and co-director of the Stanford Cancer Institute's Cancer Therapeutics Program. From 2013 to 2020, he served as chief of the Division of Oncology. Trained in internal medicine and medical oncology, Dr. Sledge has devoted his professional career to understanding the biology and improving the treatment of breast cancer. He is active as both a laboratory and clinical researcher, with more than 390 scientific publications.

He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is a member of numerous societies including the American Society of Breast Disease and the American Society of Breast Surgeons. Dr. Stolier has a particular interest in breast cancer genetics and the associated care of women with BRCA genetic mutations.

Dr. Thomson is a professor in the College of Public Health and holds joint appointments in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the College of Medicine at the University of Arizona. She serves as the director of the Canyon Ranch Center of Prevention and Health Promotion at the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, a center whose mission is to support a healthier Tucson community. She is also the director of the Arizona Smokers’ Helpline, a direct service program for the public, funded by the Arizona Department of Health Services, to support smoking cessation and chronic disease risk reduction. As a cancer prevention scientist and co-lead of the University of Arizona Cancer Center Cancer Prevention and Control, her research emphases include lifestyle interventions in cancer survivors, as well as behavioral interventions for weight control and metabolic regulation.

Dr. Winer is the Alfred Gilman Professor of Pharmacology and also professor of medicine at Yale University. He serves as director of the Yale Cancer Center and is physician-in-chief of the Smilow Cancer Network. An internationally renowned expert in breast cancer, Dr. Winer has led and collaborated on innumerable clinical trials that have changed the face of the disease. He has served as president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Dr. Winer has published more than 350 original manuscripts and mentored more than 30 fellows and junior faculty. In recognition of his mentoring impact, he was the recipient of the William Silen Lifetime Achievement in Mentoring Award from Harvard Medical School in 2020. He also has received numerous awards for his breast cancer research, most notably the William L. McGuire Memorial Lecture Award in 2016 at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium.
