Robert J. Allen, M.D., is the pioneer of the skin sparing DIEP/SIEA/S-GAP flap and the founder of The Center for Microsurgical Breast Reconstruction. As a plastic surgeon, he has an interest in autogenous breast reconstruction and microsurgery. He believes that all women have the chance to keep their stomach muscle and still have natural breasts after breast cancer. Dr. Allen has limited his practice to microsurgical breast reconstruction for the past seven years.
Dr. Allen received a medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. He then went on to residency at Louisiana State University in plastics and general surgery. After completion of general and plastic surgery training in Louisiana, he moved to New York City for a one-year fellowship in reconstructive microsurgery at New York University Center. Upon returning to New Orleans, Dr. Allen was appointed to program director of LSU Plastic Surgery Residency. He now holds fellowships with other plastic surgeons who have an interest in learning breast microsurgery.
