How Vincristine works
Vincristine is a type of chemotherapy called a vinca alkaloid. The medicine works by interfering with cell division and triggering cell death.
Vinorelbine is another vinca alkaloid.
What to expect during Vincristine treatment
Vincristine is given intravenously. It’s usually given once a week.
You may get vincristine through a drip into your arm or hand — or, if necessary, a central line.
Be sure to tell your doctor what other medications you’re taking, including herbal supplements.
Vincristine side effects
Like almost all breast cancer medicines, vincristine can cause side effects, some of them severe.
The most common side effects of vincristine are:
muscle and abdominal cramps
irregular periods — this can include temporary cessation (usually resume after medication is completed) or permanent cessation of menstrual periods depending on your age and other factors
More severe side effects may include:
seizures
Vincristine is not recommended if you’re pregnant or nursing.
