Barbara Rabinowitz, Ph.D., M.S.W., R.N.

Dr. Barbara Rabinowitz is director of oncology for all three acute care institutions of Meridian Health in New Jersey. She began her career as a nurse and later received master's and doctoral degrees in social work from Rutgers University as well as certification in sex therapy from Rutgers Medical School. She maintains an active private practice, working with cancer survivors in groups, in couples, and individually on psychosocial and sexual issues related to breast cancer diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation.

In 1985 Dr. Rabinowitz founded the National Consortium of Breast Centers, now 1,000 members strong, and is a past president. She is the first woman and first non-physician president of the American Society of Breast Disease. Dr. Rabinowitz served as co-chair of the Psychosocial/Nursing Advisory Group to the New Jersey Commission on Cancer Research and was later appointed by Governor Whitman as the first commissioner to the New Jersey Commission on Cancer Research from a psychosocial discipline. She has received several awards for her work, is a prolific author, and is a frequent speaker at national meetings.

"So many women report difficulty in getting answers to their questions regarding the impact of breast cancer and breast cancer treatment on intimacy and sexuality;" says Dr. Rabinowitz. "I am in awe of the reach of Breastcancer.org and encouraged that this powerful vehicle will afford women a source for answers not always found so cogently prepared nor so reliably authored."
