QUESTION: My friend's doctor is advising her that the studies indicate that silicone implants may somehow reduce the recurrence of tumors vs. the use of saline implants. Is this true? Do you have data that supports or refutes this? Or is this just a personal preference of the doctor?
ANSWER: I am unaware of any evidence whatsoever that correlates recurrence rate with type of breast implant for women after mastectomy. Most women these days choose saline-filled silicone bag implants. It is true, however, that silicone-filled implants have more of a natural feel. All of the large studies show no trend or statistically significant association between silicone-filled implants and the risk of auto-immune diseases.
Thus, I would make the choice of implant with your doctor based on these practical and aesthetic considerations rather than on the concern about recurrence.
